Sensata notifies victims of ransomware data breach that compromised SSNs, financial and medical info

Industrial tech maker Sensata yesterday confirmed it notified victims of an April 2025 data breach that compromised the following personal info:
- Names
- Social Security numbers
- Tax ID numbers
- Government-issued ID numbers
- Financial account info
- Payment card info
- Medical info
- Health insurance info
- Dates of birth
Sensata has not publicly disclosed the total number of victims, but Maine’s attorney general reports the company notified 362 people in that state alone.
No ransomware gang has taken credit for the attack as of time of writing. Sensata says attackers first broke into its systems on March 28, 2025.
“On April 6, 2025, Sensata Technologies Holding plc (the “Company”) experienced a ransomware incident that has encrypted certain devices in the Company’s network,” says the company in an 8-K SEC filing. “The incident has temporarily impacted Sensata’s operations, including shipping, receiving, manufacturing production, and various other support functions. While the Company has implemented interim measures to allow for the restoration of certain functions, the timeline for a full restoration is not yet known. The preliminary investigation has identified evidence that files were taken from the Company’s environment.”
Sensata is offering victims 12 months of free identity restoration through Experian.
We do not know if Sensata paid a ransom, how much was demanded, or how attackers breached its network. Comparitech contacted Sensata for comment and will update this article if it replies.
Ransomware attacks on US manufacturers
In 2025 to date, Comparitech researchers have logged 21 confirmed ransomware attacks on US manufacturers. We’re monitoring another 334 unconfirmed claims that haven’t been acknowledged by the targeted companies.
Other such attacks confirmed this week include:
- KYB Americas Corporation notified 2,041 people of a February 2025 data breach claimed by Cactus
- General Digital Corporation notified 114 people after a January 2025 data breach claimed by Space Bears
- Anchor Industries reported a Memorial Day weekend attack claimed by Play Ransomware
The manufacturing industry is a growing target for hackers. The total number of attacks rose from 40 in 2022 to 85 in 2023 and 94 in 2024. The number of records breached rose accordingly as well, from 1 million in 2023 to 2.5 million in 2024.
Ransomware attacks on US manufacturers can both steal data and lock down computer systems, leading to costly production delays and significant business risks. Manufacturers must pay a ransom or face extended downtime, data loss, and putting data subjects at increased risk of fraud.
